2022 World Cup: the Canadian promise

Canada leads the CONCACAF zone and has a good chance of playing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It’s not the first country that comes to mind when it comes to football, but Canada might surprise more than one. While they played only one World Cup final phase in their history in 1986 (eliminated in pools with 3 losses in 3 games), the Canucks are for the moment the leader of the CONCACAF zone for the qualification for the World Cup in Qatar.

After their victory against the Costa Rica thanks to a goal from Lille Jonathan David, the Canadians won on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday against the Mexico (2-1), thus seizing the leader’s chair in front of the United States. A result which confirms the rise of this talented generation team.

A talented generation

Taken by the rear left of the Bayern Alphonso Davies as well as the striker of LOSC Jonathan David, Canada has moved from 117th to 40th place in the FIFA rankings, thanks in particular to their good results during the last editions of the Gold Cup (two quarter-finals and a half over the last 3 editions). The champion scorer of France with the Mastiffs also displays impressive statistics with his selection, of which he is already the 4th highest scorer with 18 goals in only 23 games. He is only 4 units away from first place.

Their last defeat in an official match dates back to the semi-final lost against Mexico, they are undefeated in 8 games in the qualifiers for the World Cup.

Nothing is decided yet, but the red and white have a good chance of making it to Qatar as they are 7 points ahead of the first non-qualifier. Like the United States, Canada is making the most of its golden generation, North America could have some surprises in store in November 2022.
