Brazil: Tite defends Neymar, target of criticism

Criticized after the draw against Colombia, Neymar received the support of his coach, who refuses to see him as a savior.

Brazil saw its 100% winning streak in World Cup qualifying come to an end on Sunday, conceding a disappointing draw against Colombia (0-0).

Neymar struggled to make a significant impact on the game and missed 15 assists during the game, but Tite declined to criticize the Paris Saint-Germain forward for his performance.

The Brazil manager warned that Neymar should not be relied on to be decisive in every game, saying in the post-match press conference:

“Neymar was good and so was the whole team. Maybe he is expected to do exceptional things all the time and make a difference all the time.”

“He’s an exceptional player because he produces exceptional moments, but not all the time. He is a different player, we know that.”

“But today he was very well marked, sometimes with two players on him.”

A last World Cup for Neymar

Neymar has represented Brazil in two World Cups and two Copa América, but has only lifted one trophy in his international career: the 2013 Confederations Cup.

The 29-year-old is determined to lead his country to glory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but has also admitted it could be his last appearance in the tournament.

“I think this is my last World Cup”, Neymar told DAZN. “I see her as my last because I don’t know if I have the strength of mind to handle football now.”

Neymar has 114 caps for Brazil since making his international debut in 2010. He has scored 69 goals, placing him second in the scorers list in the country’s history, behind Pelé, who has scored 77 in 92 matches. .

Six of the PSG striker’s goals were scored in the Selecao’s last World Cup qualifying campaign, and he could have another chance to increase his tally in the game against Uruguay on Thursday.
