FIFA World Ranking: Les Bleus in danger

Somewhat returned to Belgium and Brazil thanks to its results this fall, France could nevertheless lose its place on the podium next spring.

Winners of the Nations League in October thanks to two stunning successes against Belgium then Spain and qualified for the World Cup in Qatar thanks to two convincing victories against Kazakhstan and Finland, the Blues finished 2021 perfectly. end of the year with a bang which allows France to consolidate its third place in the FIFA rankings and even to get closer to the leading duo made up of Belgium and Brazil.

But the situation could quickly change in 2022. Because while France will play only two friendlies in March, Brazil and Argentina still have five qualifying matches for the World Cup to play. At least if the shock between the Seleçao and the Albiceleste, interrupted after only a few minutes last September, is indeed reprogrammed.

France left the podium?

After having missed the boat twice this fall, Brazil will have a golden opportunity to fill its two points of disbursement on Belgium and recover first place in the standings. But Argentina could also take the opportunity to get closer to the podium, or even dispossess France of its third place if the latter is at fault during its two friendlies scheduled for March.

While it will be 35.7 points behind France in the next FIFA ranking, the Albiceleste can indeed hope to score more than 42 points if it hits the mark in its five matches to be played against Brazil, but also Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Ecuador. And this while in the best case, that is to say by facing Belgium, France will garner 5.4 points for a friendly victory.

The formula used to establish the points of each nation takes into account the importance of the matches. And this criterion is worth 25 for a qualifying match for the World Cup when it is only 10 for a friendly match. The Blues will nevertheless be able to make up for it in June with the four Nations League matches on the program, this time with an importance factor set at 15.
