Chelsea: Lukaku’s agent reveals Premier League club tried to buy him in 2020

The Citizens expressed interest in the Belgian after his excellent season at Inter, but failed to strike a deal with the Covid.

Romelu Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello has revealed that Manchester City have tried to sign the Chelsea star in 2020. Romelu Lukaku left Inter Milan for Chelsea for around € 115million this summer, returning to Stamford Bridge for a second stint, after a totally missed first pass when he was younger, after two impressive years at San Siro.

The Belgium international could have ended up at another Premier League club a year earlier, with Pastorello claiming that City made a gesture for their client at the end of the 2020-21 campaign. Logistical problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic ultimately prevented the deal from going through, and Lukaku’s representative told The Telegraph: “I think I can say without disappointing anyone that Manchester City came the year before.”

“During the pandemic, it was very complicated to try to get on a plane to meet people. It all started in a very concrete and serious way, but eventually they changed their minds or they weren’t ready to. Honestly, it was very difficult after the first year – it was almost impossible. He hadn’t won the league with Inter and he wanted to do it, and it would’ve been really impossible. Then they [City] focused on Harry Kane this summer“, explained the agent of the Belgian striker.

“I told Romelu, it’s now or never”

Romelu Lukaku looked happy at Inter after leading the club to their first Scudetto in 11 years last season, but his head quickly turned after Chelsea identified him as their priority target. Pastorello says the 28-year-old had some doubts initially but advised the striker to return to Stamford Bridge because the opportunity was unlikely to arise again in the future.

“That’s what I was telling Romelu, that it was now or never, because he probably didn’t realize it 100% at the beginning”, said the Italian agent. “I had to tell him to remember that sometimes there are trains and when they go by they don’t come back. Because of the situation, because of the market and because there weren’t many possibilities, it was Romelu’s train. Chelsea were 100% sure it was him, I never had any doubts but I think they had to think twice before they did. There were other offers before reaching the level of the one Inter accepted“.

“There were four offers and the fifth was the one that closed the negotiations. Looking back, I think everyone got a really good deal.“, concluded the Chelsea forward’s agent. Lukaku has scored four goals in his first four appearances in all competitions after re-signing for Chelsea, but failed to find the net in his Six outings for Thomas Tuchel’s side next. The Belgian’s woes were compounded when he injured himself in the Champions League win over Malmö last week, and he is unlikely to return to action before the international break.
