FC Barcelona: Koeman’s dismissal, a simple matter of time

The board made its decision a few days ago, but there is no agreement on when to lay off.

Ronald Koeman is doomed. A few days ago, senior sports officials at FC Barcelona decided that the Dutch technician would no longer be the coach of the Blaugrana, although there was no specific date for the execution of the agreed dismissal. Today, the execution of that decision is still undated, although events may precipitate in the coming hours due to the outrage produced among club officials by Wednesday’s game at Luz Stadium.

FC Barcelona: The umpteenth lunar exit on his future for Ronald Koeman after the defeat against Benfica

Initially, the FC Barcelona board set themselves the goal of implementing the change of coach during the international break in October, so as not to distract the team – with many consecutive games – and avoid a heated debate on the sporting situation during the assembly of socios on October 17. In addition, a small amount of time was given to find a replacement which would signify Joan Laporta’s first big bet in the field of football. The president continues to defend that Koeman is not his coach, but the one he inherited from Josep Maria Bartomeu.

But after the Lisbon debacle, it’s not so obvious that Laporta will wait until the end of the week. Much of his board wants Ronald Koeman to leave this Thursday, with only four days left until the break and a game where even Koeman won’t be sitting on the bench. The coach is suspended for his expulsion at Cadiz and will not lead his side from the sidelines at Wanda Metropolitano, in a game against Atletico Madrid which comes at a terrible time for Barcelona.

The debate has already taken place on the plane back to Barcelona and to the Ciutat Esportiva until very late in the evening. And it will continue this Thursday. The club president is unsure whether Ronald Koeman’s dismissal should be done before the game against Atlético de Madrid, although many of his colleagues are convinced that the sooner the sacking takes place, the better in order to start a new project without wasting more time.

FC Barcelona in talks with Roberto Martinez to replace Koeman

The FC Barcelona board has not yet decided who will replace Ronald Koeman on the sidelines. Xavi Hernández is the one who generates the most consensus within the club, although no one at FC Barcelona contacted the former captain until at least last Friday, something which happened with Roberto Martínez. The Belgium manager is beloved by Laporta and Jordi Cruyff, a person with great influence over the president in sporting matters, although he is not the favorite of the whole board or the football department, who would prefer Xavi to him.

Other names are also cited to take over from Ronald Koeman on the FC Barcelona bench, although to date there have been no negotiations with a coach. Several coaches have been mentioned, from Andrea Pirlo to Marcelo Gallardo, a name RAC1 included in Barca’s shortlist on Thursday.
