Josh Cavallo has come out publicly on social media and Gerard Pique is supporting him.
FC Barcelona center-back Gerard Pique has expressed his support for Adelaide United left-back Josh Cavallo, who has come out publicly on social media.
Cavallo is the only active premier league professional footballer to be openly gay, so his decision is both courageous and historic.
“I don’t have the pleasure of knowing you personally, but I want to thank you for the step you take,” Pique tweeted. “The world of football is far behind and you are helping us move forward.”
Not to miss
Cavallo, 21, went through the youth system with Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, eventually breaking through to the latter club’s first-team in 2017.
He left for Western United in 2019, spending two years there before joining Adelaide in 2021. He made an appearance in the Australian U20 national team.
Several other personalities in European football have also spoken in favor of Cavallo, but it was above all Pique who spoke with clarity and elegance.
The 34-year-old is at the end of his professional football career, but he has a lot to offer off the pitch.
Already a successful businessman, many believe he will one day become president of FC Barcelona.
