The Premier League match between Southampton and Newcastle this Sunday has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the Premier League. While several Boxing Day matches have already been postponed, a new meeting has just been canceled and moved to a later date.
The Premier League announced on Friday that Southampton–Newcastle, which was to take place on Sunday at 3 p.m., could not be held because of the too large number of positive cases within the workforce of the Magpies.
Following a request from Newcastle, the Premier League Board has regrettably agreed to postpone the club’s away fixture against Southampton, due to be played at 2pm on Sunday 2 January

“Newcastle continue to have cases of COVID-19 and injuries which led to their game against Everton being canceled earlier this week. The Board accepted the postponement request because the club does not have the required number of players available for the match ”, can we read in this press release.

Newcastle, who have already seen their game against Everton postponed Thursday, asked the League to also postpone the meeting against the Saints.
While the clubs had decided to maintain Boxing Day in order to avoid overloading the second part of the season, some clubs will have many matches to catch up. Manchester City and Chelsea have played their 20 matches while Burnley is only 16, Tottenham, Everton and Watford at 17. The end of the season in the Premier League may be busy …
