Undermined by the Covid-19, Tottenham was given the loser on the green carpet of their meeting against Stade Rennais (0-3). Spurs are eliminated from the Europa League Conf
It’s over for Tottenham in the Europa League Conference. The Spurs were given the loser on the green carpet (0-3) of their meeting against the Rennais Stadium, who had not been able to argue on December 9 because of the multiple cases of Covid-19 within the London club.
This outcome was expected since UEFA announced that the match could not be replayed, due to the busy schedule of Antonio Conte’s players. On the day of the match, Stade Rennais was surprised to have been warned late, and had indicated that the decision not to play had been taken by Tottenham, without an initial agreement from UEFA.
Rennes was already qualified
At the time of the meeting, the Spurs had announced that they had 13 positive cases in their ranks: eight players and five members of the staff. Two of their Premier League fixtures have been postponed due to Covid-19, but UEFA has not shown the same tolerance.
As a result, with this defeat on the green carpet, Tottenham finished third in their group and found themselves eliminated from the competition, leaving Vitesse Arnhem to play the play-offs of the Europa Conference Conference. Rennes, for its part, was already assured of first place. The Bretons are directly qualified for the knockout stages of the C4.
