World No.1 Novak Djokovic won the Paris Masters 1000 for the sixth time this Sunday, beating defending champion and No.2 Daniil Medvedvev, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

World number 1 Novak Djokovic won the Paris Masters 1000 for the sixth time on Sunday beating 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 defending champion Daniil Medvedev (world No. 2) who deprived him of the Grand Slam in September at the US Open.

A 37e record title in Masters 1000

For his first tournament since his failure in New York, the Serbian won a 37e record title in Masters 1000, the category just below Grand Slam tournaments, one more than Rafael Nadal. Djokovic had made sure the day before to end the season at the top of the world hierarchy for the seventh time, a record also, which he now holds alone with a head start on Pete Sampras.

Medvedev put up a very solid resistance during a spectacular match (38 winning shots for Djokovic, 32 for Medvedev) between the two best players in the current world, which ignited the public of Bercy.

The Russian started the game with a bang by taking Djokovic’s entry into play. But the latter took advantage a little later of a poor service game from his opponent to pick up at 2-2.

Medvedev, however, regained the advantage to break away 4-3 and complete the first set.

The overheated audience of Bercy

The level and the pressure rose a notch in the second set where Djokovic broke away 4-1 and retained his advantage to tie one set everywhere.

The public, overheated, was embarrassing at times for the players, to the point of pushing the referee Aurélie Tourte to throw for the attention of a spectator “I think that for you, it is time to go for a take a little tour outside! “

The balls were further tortured in the decisive set, sailing at very high speed from end to end, line to line and corner to court.

The Serb put a first hand on the trophy by making a double break which allowed him to come off 5-2. Medvedev managed to resume service from Djokovic once, but the latter concluded with his first match point, on the service of the Russian.

Novak Djokovic thus won the 86e title of his career.
